Indigenous names and spelling

Capitalise Aboriginal and Indigenous (both the noun and adjective) when referring to First Nations Australians.

The generic terms aboriginal and indigenous are not capitalised.

Examples

  • Western Australian Aboriginal communities
  • Torres Strait Islanders
  • Non-Aboriginal employees
  • Indigenous landholders

Use local names where appropriate, such as Nyungar and Whadjuk.

Nyungar is the spelling approved by the Centre for Aboriginal Studies’ advisory for the original inhabitants of the south-west of Western Australia.
