Tiers

Curtin’s locations can be referred to by country or city; by campus name; or by a specific name. These are divided into five tiers in Figure 1.

The tier you choose will depend on the audience, distribution and objectives of your communication.

If your communication includes a list or overview of multiple locations, avoid mixing names from different tiers if possible. Some names are common to multiple tiers.

Depending upon the tier you use, the number of Curtin locations will vary between 6 and 12 locations.

A hierarchical flowchart diagram representing Curtin University's campus and location naming tiers across five levels:Tier 1 (Country): 6 locations – Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, Dubai, Mauritius, Online. Tier 2 (Region): 7 locations – Within Australia, includes Perth, Kalgoorlie, Midland. Tier 3 (City): 9 locations – Perth branches into “Perth” and “Perth city”; Midland and Kalgoorlie are separate. Tier 4 (Campus): 10 locations – Includes Curtin Perth, Curtin Murray Street, Curtin St Georges Terrace, Curtin Centennial Place, and international campuses such as Curtin Kalgoorlie, Curtin University Malaysia, Curtin Singapore, Curtin University Dubai, and Curtin Mauritius. Examples (numbers correspond with examples in the table above)

1.1 List of all locations for a web landing page or the cover of a marketing brochure (global)

When we want to demonstrate that we’re global, but don’t require detail, use tier 1 (Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, Dubai, Mauritius, Sri Lanka).

2.4 Detail on courses and where they’re delivered (national)

These course snapshots are taken from an undergraduate course guide distributed nationally. For this use, tier 3 is sufficient. The audience isn’t interested in wayfinding at this stage – just general location.

1.2 Detail on all Curtin locations

The Curtin About page details all locations with a list taken from tier 4 and is further broken down into tier 5 information.

3.3 Differentiating between WA locations

This diagram taken from the undergraduate course guide indicates different WA Curtin locations and uses tier 3 names.

1.3 Detail on Curtin’s Australian locations only

The Campus locations details all Australian only locations with a list taken from tier 3.

3.4 Specifics on an event venue

Any wayfinding or venue information should be taken from tier 5. You would usually also include a street address.

1.4 Announcement of a new Curtin location

The announcement of a new campus will naturally require specifics. 137 St Georges Terrace is a tier 5 name. You may also include a street address (See Street addresses).

Curtin Perth

Curtin Perth is Curtin’s largest campus, located in the suburb of Bentley, about six kilometres south-east of central Perth. In close proximity to everything Perth has to offer, Curtin Perth boasts 116 hectares of bold architecture nestled amongst beautifully landscaped gardens. Thousands of students fill the campus grounds every day of semester, creating a vibrant, multicultural atmosphere. Over the past decade, the campus has undergone some major changes, with a variety of striking modern buildings now interspersed with the original 1960s architecture. Our award-winning Exchange precinct is home to a wide range of delicious food options, a boutique hotel, Tucker IGA, our central bus station and some of our popular student accommodation.

Murray Street, in the heart of Perth’s central business district, is home to the Curtin Graduate School of Business and the Curtin Law School.

At 57 Murray Street, Curtin Law School enables law students to undertake some of their studies in close proximity to Perth’s law courts. Students can gain practical professional legal skills in the in-house legal clinic where they meet with and prepare advice for small business clients, and can also participate in simulated court proceedings at the high-tech moot court facility situated within the building.

Located in a refurbished 19th century building at 78 Murray Street, the Curtin Graduate School of Business delivers postgraduate business courses including our renowned MBA.

Curtin St Georges Terrace

Our premises at 137 and 139 St Georges Terrace strengthen our links with industry partners and graduates working in the area and provide a space to deliver postgraduate and professional education.

The historic limestone building at 139 St Georges Terrace was constructed in 1854 to accommodate Perth Boys School and is the oldest government school building in Western Australia. Although the school was relocated to new premises in 1897, the Gothic Revival-style building remains commonly referred to as ‘Old Perth Boys School’. It is primarily an event and exhibition space for Curtin.

The adjacent 137 St Georges Terrace was built in 1909 to accommodate Perth Technical School, which was eventually absorbed into the Western Australian Institute of Technology – Curtin’s predecessor – and moved to Kent Street. In 2018, Curtin signed a lease agreement with Brookfield to transform the building into a modern learning space to deliver professional learning programs and select postgraduate courses.
